Историк, педагог, автор трудов об истории афро-американцев [Afro-Americans]. Наряду с У. Дюбуа [Du Bois, William Edward Burghardt (W. E. B.)] его называют "отцом негритянской истории США". Сын освобожденного раба, начал учебу в средней школе в возрасте 20 лет. В 1912 получил степень доктора философии [Ph.D.] в Гарвардском университете [Harvard University]. В 1919-20 декан гуманитарного факультета Университета Хауарда [Howard University], в 1920-22 Колледжа штата Западная Вирджиния [West Virginia State College]. Одним из первых в США обратился к изучению истории Африки, в том числе ее средневековых цивилизаций. В 1915 создал Ассоциацию изучения негритянской жизни и истории [Association for the Study of Negro Life and History]. Основал журналы "Джорнал ов нигроу хистори" [Journal of Negro History] (1916) и "Нигроу хистори бюллетин" [Negro History Bulletin] (1937), в 1922 создал издательство "Ассошиэйтед паблишерс" [Associated Publishers], которое публиковало книги о негритянской жизни и культуре. В 1926 был удостоен премии Национальной ассоциации содействия прогрессу цветного населения [NAACP]. С 1944 до конца жизни редактировал 6-томную энциклопедию "Африкана" ["Encyclopedia Africana"]. Среди других трудов: "Образование негров до 1861 года" ["The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861"] (1915), "Негры в нашей истории" ["The Negro in Our History"] (1922)
